Thistledown Labradors was established
in 1976 and, for 35 years, has been dedicated to
producing healthy Labrador Retrievers with good
temperaments and correct type, according to the Labrador
breed standard. Some people refer to this as the
"English type" Labrador. I get proper health and
genetic clearances on my dogs before using them for
breeding, and strive to rule out other problems for
which we have no test or database.
My interest
in Labradors began
many years ago when my teenage daughter wanted a Lab
puppy for her birthday. At that time, I worked for
Barbara Gilchrist's father. So, naturally (and
luckily), that's where I found our first Labrador ... a
beautiful yellow female. Barbara encouraged my
daughter to show this puppy, and thus began my 35-year
friendship with Barbara. Because I also loved
Golden Retrievers, I bought a very nice girl and showed
Goldens for several years. When my daughter lost
interest in showing, I took over the Labradors as well
as the Goldens. Eventually, I concentrated solely
on my wonderful Labrador Retrievers. I guess I was
"hooked"!
I am proud to have produced show champions, good hunting
dogs, obedience dogs, service dogs and wonderful family
companions. My interest in obedience competition
has led to attaining multiple obedience titles including
a utility certification.
We only
have occasional litters and strive for quality rather
than quantity. I carefully screen puppy placements, so I can
rest assured that the puppy will live a good life with
proper care and lots of love, and that they will make a
successful contribution to the happiness of their
families. Occasionally, I have an adult available
for placement into a retirement home, and I make sure
it's the perfect home for that particular dog.
Stud service is available to approved bitches.
I hope you enjoy visiting our new website. It is
still in final stages of construction, so please check
back to see our new "Gallery", the "Retired" page and
the final touches. Please feel
free to contact me with any comments or questions.
